Gas Prices Go Up Travelers Hit Hard
Is There A Reason For High Gas ??
As motorists prepare for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, national gasoline prices have reached a six month high.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average retail gasoline price was $2.89 per gallon during the latest reporting period.
According to a web site that monitors gas prices in Alabama (alabamagasprices.com), the average retail price of gasoline has fallen 2.5 cents per gallon statewide during the past week. The average price of gasoline in Alabama now sits at $2.71 per gallon. In Cullman, gasoline at most stations sits at around $2.74 per gallon and some as high as $2.79 per gallon or more. Officials say that several factors contribute to varying local gasoline prices including brand and proximity of the station to a major highway or interstate.
Nationally, economic analysts have blamed the recent rise in gasoline prices to temporary shutdowns at refineries in the United States and France, and to a weak U.S. dollar leading into this month. Most predictions agree that rising prices will top off or fall by January.
“Locally the price of gas looks like it is going to remain pretty flat for the next few months,” said Chuck Moore, general manager of Jet-Pep, a Holly Pond based company that owns and operates over 100 filling stations throughout Alabama. “Unless there is some kind of international factor that affects the price I don’t foresee it fluctuating very much in the area.”
According to reports, the national average price of gasoline has increased 4.1 cents per gallon during the past month and remains about 22.9 cents per gallon higher than at this time a year ago.
